Through studying different movement arts, such as Parkour and Muay Thai, I began to find my footing and build my own identity. One day, in a group chat that included Coach Joel, I half-jokingly mentioned that I struggled with my identity. He reached out to me immediately and offered his expertise. He asked a couple of important questions, including the goals and visions I had for my life, what steps I needed to take, what steps I was currently taking, and how I was progressing compared to yesterday. His process involves not just goal-setting but the journey to achieve those goals. “What are one or two things you are focusing on?” “Focus on yourself, not others.” “How did you improve from yesterday?” These are all questions we have heard in Muay Thai, and they fit almost perfectly with progressing in life; you are deciding what you want to work on, and he is there to listen and offer guidance.

Coach Joel is himself a veteran. Being able to talk about my struggles with someone who faced similar experiences helped an incredible amount. It helped me reshape some of the stories about my time in and allowed me to see all the positives from my enlistment. Coach Joel definitely helped with integrating that time in my life and letting me get that monkey off my back. "Coach Joel has had a very special impact on my life, which started with me attending his Muay Thai classes twice a week. I initially started the classes to get in shape and learn basic self-defense, but I fell in love with the sport and culture largely because of how fun Coach Joel made them.
When I decided I wanted to compete in my first point Muay Thai match, Coach Joel took his role as a coach very seriously and challenged me to become the strongest version of myself physically, mentally, and spiritually. I liked how he always told me to journal and think about "why" I wanted to train and compete, which made me dig deep to better understand my intentions. The training coach put me through was intense. I had never been physically challenged like that in my life. Coach checked up on me every day through text to help keep me accountable with my weight management and solo training sessions, which made the experience less stressful. The fight ended up in a draw, and coach gave great feedback and said he was proud.
Glad I've been able to keep in touch with coach since he moved out of state. Since then, I've had 4 more point Muay Thai matches and 4 amateur fights, in which coach still provides feedback through the phone after I send him videos of all of them.
